Dulles Metrorail - Construction
What's Happening Now
Phase 1 - Along Route 7:
In preparation for the construction of Phase 1 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, work will start this fall on the relocation of utilities along the Route 7 corridor between Route 123 and the Dulles Airport Access Road. Utilities will be placed below ground
Construction of Phase 1 (from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue in Reston) is expected to begin in mid-2008.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority in September submitted its 2007 New Starts Proposal and its Request to Enter Final Design to the Federal Transit Administration. The New Starts proposal included proposed cost adjustments of about $300,000.
Those submissions followed the approval by the Airports Authority and Dulles Transit Partners of a $1.6 billion contract for construction of Phase 1, including the aerial alignment through Tysons Corner, bringing total project costs to between $2.4 and $2.8 billion.
In December 2006, Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine announced that the rail project team would continue to work to build the aerial alignment through Tysons Corner. Both Loudoun and Fairfax counties approved operating agreements and the locally approved alternative (including the aerial alignment) in the summer of 2007 as did the boards of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Phase 2:
Planning continues for construction of Phase 2 from Wiehle Avenue in Reston to Reston Parkway, Herndon-Monroe, Route 28, Dulles Airport, Route 606 and Ashburn.
