Sunrise Valley Drive Blocked to Thru Traffic near Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride
Limited Access Between Fairfax County Parkway and Monroe Street

On Tuesday, September 17, a construction excavator hit a gas line causing major back-ups in both directions of Sunrise Valley Drive in the Reston-Herndon area near the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride garage. The intersection of Sunrise Valley Drive and Roark Drive is completely closed. The back-up is affecting traffic in both directions. Traffic trying to enter and exit the parking garage is being directed by emergency crews.
The incident happened earlier this afternoon near the intersection of Sunrise Valley Drive and Roark Drive at the entrance to the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride garage.
Emergency crews are working to install a temporary repair to reopen the eastbound lanes as quickly as possible tonight. The westbound lanes could be closed for six to 10 hours while the final repairs are made.
The equipment was being used by a subcontractor doing work related to Phase 2 of the Silver Line.
