Detour, Lane Shift Planned for One Block of Old Meadow Road Nov. 16-17
The final paving work for the realignment of Old Meadow Road with Capital One Tower Drive at Route 123 (Dolley Madison Boulevard) is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 16, Tuesday, Nov. 17, and will require a lane shift and partial detour.
As colder weather sets it, particularly in the evenings, the contractor finds it necessary to conduct a detour and lane shift along one block of the road to permit final paving. This will enable the contractor to complete the work before the Thanksgiving holiday. The work will occur on two consecutive days from dawn until dusk, or until that day's work is complete. Police will be stationed along the work site.
Weather permitting, on Monday, Nov. 16, westbound/outbound Old Meadow Road traffic will use a detour via Chain Bridge Road (formerly Colshire Meadows Drive) and Colshire Drive to access Route 123 during the paving work. Eastbound/inbound traffic will use a single lane on Old Meadow from Route 123. See Day 1 Map below.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17, eastbound/inbound traffic from Route 123 will use a detour via Colshire Drive and Chain Bridge Road (formerly Colshire Meadows Drive) to access Old Meadow during the paving work. Westbound/outbound traffic will use a single lane on Old Meadow. See Day 2 Map below.
If striping cannot be done each night following the paving work, crews might require a third day of traffic shifts.
While the contractor had hoped to perform this work at nights or on weekends, that is no longer possible. Because asphalt is temperature-dependent, it is too cold at night during this time of year to do the work. That also means production plants are closed on weekends now.
The parking lot at 1690 Old Meadow Road as well as the CityLine property will remain accessible during this work. A public notice will be distributed today, and signs will be posted to direct traffic.
