New Silver Line Stations Not Open to the Public ... Yet
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is reminding the public that the six new Phase 2 Silver Line Metrorail stations along the Dulles Airport Highway/Dulles Toll Road from Reston to Ashburn are still under construction and not yet open.
While the stations appear to be completed, they remain closed to the public because of ongoing construction work and potential safety hazards.
Construction crews continue to work on a number of items including installation and testing of high-voltage electrical systems. The pavilions leading to stations, tracks and other areas are also closed. Those stations are Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn, as well as the station at Dulles International Airport.
In addition to safety hazards, entering these facilities is trespassing, according to Authority and Capital Rail Constructors, builders of the rail extension. Signs at each facility indicate the stations are closed until Phase 2 of the Silver Line opens for business, most likely in early 2022.
“The safety of our workers and the general public continues to be a priority of this project. Safety always comes first. We understand that the stations, support structures and other areas may appear interesting, but we are asking that everyone comply with signs, barricades and other restrictions around the Silver Line station construction sites," said project spokesperson Marcia McAllister.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) will determine the opening date for the new stations, currently expected during the first quarter of 2022.
