Rail-Polishing Trains Moved onto Phase 2 Tracks
Silver Line Phase 2 work crews successfully moved two two-car trains along Silver Line Phase 2 tracks early Thursday morning from Wiehle Avenue to Innovation Center Station.
Using a large self-powered locomotive, crews from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority nudged the trains along the tracks in an exercise coordinated with the project contractor, Capital Rail Constructors. The work began around midnight and lasted about three and half hours.
The trains, now "cold stored" at Innovation Center Station, will be used to polish the energized third rail prior to dynamic testing along the aerial guideway through Washington Dulles International Airport.
Another operation anticipated in the coming days will bring two additional two-car trains onto the Phase 2 tracks. According to project officials, preparations for Dynamic Testing are underway. This work will include:
  • Safe-Braking Testing to ensure rail cars are able to stop within specified distances and varying speeds;
  • Control-Line Testing to ensure the proper signaling communications between the train and supporting wayside facilities, such as traction power substations and train control room.
Dynamic Testing marks a significant accomplishment for Phase 2 of the Silver Line.
